Are Robot Mowers Worth It? Cost Per Mow, Calculated

Cost per mow is a division problem, and both numbers in it are softer than they look. The top is a price that moves with sales. The bottom is a number of mows nobody can promise you. What follows is the arithmetic done honestly: only prices we observed and dated, only lifespans a manufacturer will guarantee in writing, and every assumption stated as an assumption. This page cannot tell you that a robot mower will save you money, and it does not try to.

What cost per mow actually is

Cost per mow is the purchase price divided by the number of mows the machine performs before you replace it, plus the running cost of each mow. That is the whole formula. The trouble is that only one of those three inputs is published anywhere: the price, and only on the day you look.

The number of mows is not a specification. No maker in our set publishes an expected service life for the machine or a battery cycle count. The closest published figure is a component one: Mammotion's blade and motor maintenance article gives the cutting motor an expected lifespan of 1,500 hours of operation, which is one part rather than the mower. So we do not invent a machine lifespan. Instead, the arithmetic below is run against several mow counts and you pick the one that matches your own lawn and season, which is a labelled assumption rather than a hidden one.

Running cost is mostly electricity, and it is smaller than most people expect. It is also, for most models, not computable from the datasheet, for a reason covered further down.

The prices we observed, and the dates we observed them

Every figure below is a manufacturer list price recorded on the maker's own US page on the date shown. Prices move, several of these carried a lower sale price the same day, and some models have since changed status, so treat these as observations with timestamps rather than current quotes.

The spread across the mowers we publish pages for runs from about one thousand dollars to about three thousand three hundred, which is a factor of more than three on the same purchase decision. That spread, not the electricity, is what decides cost per mow.

How many mows the maker will actually guarantee

The denominator problem has one honest anchor: the warranty. It is the only number a manufacturer commits to in writing, it is published, and it is checkable. It is also not a lifespan estimate, and nobody should read it as one. A machine can easily outlive its warranty, and a machine can also fail the week after it expires. What the warranty gives you is a floor the maker will stand behind, and that makes it the only defensible period to run the arithmetic over.

Husqvarna publishes the longest term in our set: 4 years on the Automower 420 iQ mower unit for the iQ Series in the US and Canada, with batteries covered by a separate 3 year warranty. Most of the field publishes 3 years, including the LUBA 3 AWD 3000, the Navimow i110N, the YUKA mini 2 1000H, the A3 AWD Pro 3500 and the Landroid Vision WR208. Segway publishes 3 years on the Navimow X350 mower with battery pack and power adapters covered for 2 years and blades excluded as consumables. Sunseeker publishes 2 years on the X7. Ecovacs publishes 12 months on the GOAT O1000 RTK, and states the warranty is not available for units bought via Amazon Resale.

Note what that does to the cheapest machine. The GOAT O1000 RTK has the lowest published list price in the set and the shortest guaranteed term in the set, which is exactly the trade the cost per mow arithmetic has to expose rather than hide.

The arithmetic, with the assumption on the outside

Here is the division, run at three mow counts. The mow count is your assumption, not ours and not the manufacturer's. As a rough anchor, a machine that runs three times a week through a 25 week season reaches about 75 mows a year, which puts 300 mows at about four seasons, 500 at closer to seven, and 750 at a machine kept a decade. Substitute your own frequency and season length; both vary more than the price does. Worth noticing before you pick a column: on that anchor, 300 mows already sits past the guaranteed term of every mower in this set except the Husqvarna's 4 year mower warranty, which lands exactly there.

At $999.99, the GOAT O1000 RTK works out to about $3.33 a mow at 300 mows, $2.00 at 500, and $1.33 at 750. At $1,099, the Navimow i110N is about $3.66, $2.20 and $1.47. At $2,799, the LUBA 3 AWD 3000 and the Navimow X350 are each about $9.33, $5.60 and $3.73. At $3,299.99, the Automower 420 iQ is about $11.00, $6.60 and $4.40.

Two things fall out of that immediately. The first is that the whole spread collapses as the mow count rises, which means the answer to whether a robot mower is worth it depends far more on how long you keep it than on which one you buy. The second is that at 300 mows the top of the range is more than three times the bottom, and the machines are not interchangeable: the $999.99 GOAT is rated for up to 8,600 sq ft while the $3,299.99 Automower is rated at 1 acre plus or minus 20 percent, so on a large lawn the cheap column is not an option at all.   • Assumption 1: the price is the observed list price on the date recorded above, not a current or sale price.
  • Assumption 2: the mow count is yours. No maker publishes an expected number of mows, so nothing here is a manufacturer claim.
  • Assumption 3: the arithmetic ignores resale value, which is real and which we have no published data for.
  • Assumption 4: repairs outside the warranty are not priced in, because no maker in our set publishes an out of warranty repair schedule.

Electricity per mow, where it can be computed at all

Energy per charge needs two published figures, a voltage and a capacity, and most makers publish only one. Our records carry both for two current models. Ecovacs publishes a lithium ion 4000 mAh pack on an 18 V platform for the GOAT O1000 RTK, which multiplies to 72 Wh, or 0.072 kWh. Worx publishes the included WA3578 20 V 4.0 Ah battery for the Landroid Vision WR208, which multiplies to 80 Wh, or 0.080 kWh.

Run that through a rate and the number is small. Ten full charges of the GOAT pack is 0.72 kWh. At a placeholder rate of 20 cents per kilowatt hour, which you should replace with the rate printed on your own bill, ten charges is about 14 cents of electricity and one charge is about 1.4 cents. That figure is a floor, not a total, for three labelled reasons: charging is lossy and no maker in our set publishes a charger efficiency, a nameplate voltage is not the energy actually delivered, and one mow is not necessarily one full charge. Ecovacs publishes about 65 minutes of continuous mowing and a maximum coverage rating of up to 8,600 sq ft for the GOAT, so a big lawn is several charges and a small one is a fraction of one.

For the rest of the field we do not compute a figure. Our records carry a capacity without a matching voltage for the LUBA 3 AWD 3000 at 12 Ah, the Navimow X350 at 10 Ah, the A3 AWD Pro 3500 at 7.5 Ah, the X7 at 10 Ah, the YUKA mini 2 1000H at 6.1 Ah and the Automower 420 iQ at 5 Ah, so amp hours alone cannot be turned into watt hours and we leave those blank rather than guess a voltage. The one place a full energy figure is published outright is a discontinued record: EcoFlow's manual gives the Blade a 298 Wh, 21.6 V pack with a 240 minute typical mowing time, and states that all its spec data was lab measured and is for reference only.

The honest summary is that electricity is not where this decision is decided. On these numbers, a season of charges costs less than a single blade set. The purchase price is the entire argument.

The costs the sticker does not carry

Blades are the recurring consumable, and the datasheets are thin here. Segway explicitly excludes blades from the Navimow X350 warranty as consumables. Husqvarna lists a 1 year of free blades promotion on the Automower 420 iQ product page, which is a promotion and not a spec. One maker publishes an interval: Mammotion's blade and motor maintenance article recommends replacing the cutting blades every 3 months or after 150 hours of use. No other maker in our set publishes one, and no maker in our set publishes a blade price, so our records carry no per-season blade cost and we will not manufacture one; that gap is real and it is a genuine hole in any total cost of ownership claim, including this one.

Two purchase channel details also change the arithmetic. Ecovacs states its warranty is not available for units bought via Amazon Resale, so the cheapest route to the cheapest machine can remove the guaranteed term the arithmetic above rests on. And several models carry variant pricing on one page: the Landroid Vision listing offers WR210, WR220, WR230 and WR235 at $1,999.99, $2,499.00, $2,999.99 and $3,499.99 respectively, so the WR208 price above buys the 1/5 acre variant and nothing larger.

When a robot mower is not worth it

The arithmetic can come out badly, and there are five situations where the published specs say so before the price does. The first is a lawn outside the published limits. If your grade exceeds a model's slope rating, or your steep sections run to the boundary where several makers publish a much lower limit, no amount of cost per mow makes it work; robot mower slope ratings explained covers where those two figures diverge.

The second is a short holding period. At 300 mows the spread above is $3.33 to $11.00 a mow, and the case is much weaker than at 750. If you are likely to move, or to replace the machine when the next generation ships, run the arithmetic at the low column and be honest about the result.

The third is a machine whose throughput cannot be planned. Dreame publishes no runtime in minutes for the A3 AWD Pro 3500, publishing daily coverage by power mode instead, Sunseeker publishes only a battery capacity for the X7, and Worx publishes no runtime per charge for the Landroid Vision WR208. You can still buy those machines, but you cannot forecast how many mowing hours a week they need, which makes any cost per mow figure for them softer than the ones above.

The fourth is a warranty shorter than your payback horizon. A 12 month guaranteed term against a purchase you intend to amortise over five years is a mismatch you should price consciously. The fifth is the simplest: if you like mowing, or your lawn takes twenty minutes with the mower you already own, the correct answer is that the machine is not worth it, and no spreadsheet changes that.

Is cost per mow a fair way to compare robot mowers?
Only if both sides of the division carry the same assumptions. Price has to be an observed price with a date, because list and sale prices differ on the same day. The mow count has to be your own mowing frequency over a period you choose, not a manufacturer claim, because no maker publishes an expected number of mows.
