Robot mowers for St. Augustine grass: which specs matter

St. Augustine grass is the one lawn type where a robot mower's cutting-height spec can disqualify it outright. The University of Florida publishes a mowing height for standard St. Augustine cultivars that sits at the very top of what most robot mowers are rated to cut, and a separate finding about robotic mowers specifically that changes the answer. Below, the extension guidance quoted as published, read against the cutting-height range each manufacturer prints for the models we publish pages for. We have not hardware-tested any of these machines and we do not give agronomy advice of our own.

What UF/IFAS publishes for St. Augustine mowing height

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences publishes cultivar-by-cultivar mowing heights for St. Augustinegrass in ENH5/LH010, St. Augustinegrass for Florida Lawns (edis.ifas.ufl.edu/publication/LH010, release date October 2024, reviewed October 2025). Standard cultivars mowed with a rotary mower, which UF/IFAS names as BitterBlue, Classic and Floratam among others, are published at a maintained height of 3.5 to 4 inches. Palmetto and Raleigh are published at 3 to 4 inches, CitraBlue at 2.0 to 3.0 inches, and the dwarf cultivar Seville at 2 to 2.5 inches.

UF/IFAS states the reason for the height rather than leaving it as a preference: repeatedly mowing lower increases stress on the lawn, discourages deep rooting, raises the chance of scalping if a mowing is missed, and may increase susceptibility to pest problems. It also publishes the one-third rule, that no more than a third of the leaf blade should be removed at any mowing, and advises raising the height during moisture stress or in shade.

That is the agronomy, and it is the extension's, not ours. What we can do is read it against the cutting-height range each manufacturer publishes for the mowers we track, because that range is a hard mechanical limit rather than a preference.

  • Standard cultivars (BitterBlue, Classic, Floratam): 3.5 to 4 inches, per UF/IFAS ENH5/LH010.
  • Palmetto and Raleigh: 3 to 4 inches.
  • CitraBlue: 2.0 to 3.0 inches.
  • Seville (dwarf): 2 to 2.5 inches.
  • No more than one third of the leaf blade removed at any mowing.

The robotic-mower exception UF/IFAS publishes

The same publication carves out robotic mowers explicitly, which is unusual for an extension document and is the single most important sentence for anyone shopping this category. UF/IFAS states that lawns maintained with autonomous robotic mowers can tolerate lower mowing heights because they are constantly removing very small portions of the leaf blade and do not cause scalping, and it cites research at the University of Florida demonstrating that Floratam St. Augustinegrass could be maintained at 2.4 inches year round with no negative effects.

Read carefully, that changes the shape of the buying question. Against the 3.5 to 4 inch rotary figure, most of the robot mowers we publish pages for fail on the spec sheet. Against the 2.4 inch robotic figure, all eleven of them clear it, because every published cutting-height range we track spans 2.4 inches. The extension is describing a property of high-frequency clipping, not endorsing any brand, and it is a finding about Floratam in Florida research conditions rather than a universal instruction for every cultivar and climate.

So there are two defensible targets and they point at different shopping lists. If you want to run at the published rotary height for a standard cultivar, the maximum cutting height is your binding spec. If you are content to run at the robotic-mowing height UF/IFAS documents, cutting height stops eliminating machines and the usual specs, work area, slope and navigation, take over.

Published cutting-height ranges, model by model

Here is what each maker prints, with the basis its own page or manual states. Husqvarna publishes the Automower 420 iQ at approximately 1 in minimum to 4 in maximum with electric cutting height adjustment. Sunseeker publishes the X7 at 0.8 to 4.0 in with electronic height adjustment and a floating cutting deck. Segway publishes the Navimow X350 at 2 to 4 in with automatic blade height adjustment. Mammotion publishes the LUBA 3 AWD 3000 in two height variants sold at the same price: the S Version at 1.0 to 2.7 in and the H Version at 2.2 to 4.0 in.

Below the 4 inch line, Dreame publishes the A3 AWD Pro 3500 at 1.2 to 3.9 in, a figure Dreame footnotes as measured from blade disc to ground under its own lab testing. Segway publishes the Navimow i110N at 2 to 3.6 in with manual adjustment. Worx publishes the Landroid Vision WR208 at 1.57 to 3.54 in with 11 positions in the owner's manual, rounded to 1.5 to 3.5 in on the web spec table. Mammotion publishes the YUKA mini 2 1000H at 2.0 to 3.5 in. Ecovacs publishes the GOAT O1000 RTK at 1.2 to 3.2 in, manual adjustment only.

Two discontinued models round out the record. Mammotion published the LUBA 2 AWD 3000HX H Version at 2.2 to 4.0 in, and EcoFlow published the Blade at 0.8 to 3.0 in in its official manual. Both are cited from manufacturer documentation only and are used or clearance buys today.

Crossing the two lists

Set the UF/IFAS 3.5 to 4 inch standard-cultivar band against those ranges and the field splits three ways. Four active models cover the whole band: the Automower 420 iQ, the Sunseeker X7, the Navimow X350, and the LUBA 3 AWD 3000 in its H Version. Those are the four in the Quick Answer above, and the only justification for each is that its published maximum reaches 4 in.

Four more reach into the band but stop short of its top. The Dreame A3 AWD Pro 3500 tops out at 3.9 in, the Navimow i110N at 3.6 in, the Worx Landroid Vision WR208 at 3.54 in, and the YUKA mini 2 1000H at exactly 3.5 in. Each can be set somewhere inside 3.5 to 4 inches, but none can reach the top of the published range, and the YUKA mini 2 sits precisely on its lower edge with no headroom at all.

One active model cannot reach the band. Ecovacs publishes the GOAT O1000 RTK at a 3.2 in maximum, below the 3.5 in floor for standard cultivars. It does cover CitraBlue's 2.0 to 3.0 inch range, the Seville dwarf range, and the 2.4 inch robotic figure, so it is not disqualified for St. Augustine as such, only for running a standard cultivar at the rotary height UF/IFAS publishes.

The variant trap, and the adjustment mechanism

The LUBA 3 AWD 3000 is where this guide could most easily mislead, so read the variant before the spec. Mammotion sells an S Version and an H Version at the same price, and their cutting-height ranges do not overlap much at all: 1.0 to 2.7 in against 2.2 to 4.0 in. Only the H Version reaches the UF/IFAS standard-cultivar band. Our model page charts the S Version figures because that is the base configuration, so the H Version range is read from Mammotion's own cutting note rather than from the charted bar. If you buy the wrong variant you cannot fix it in the app.

Adjustment mechanism is the second thing worth reading, because St. Augustine is a grass UF/IFAS says to raise during moisture stress and in shade, and how easily you can raise it is a real difference. The Automower 420 iQ publishes electric cutting height adjustment, the Navimow X350 publishes automatic blade height adjustment, and the Sunseeker X7 publishes electronic height adjustment. The Ecovacs GOAT O1000 RTK publishes manual adjustment explicitly (its spec table lists electric height adjustment as No), and the Navimow i110N is published as manual adjustment. None of that says a machine cuts better; it says how much friction stands between you and a seasonal height change.

What this comparison does not settle

Cutting height is one spec, and on a St. Augustine lawn it is a gate rather than a ranking. Passing it does not make a mower right for your yard: work area, slope and its boundary limit, and navigation type still decide fit, and how to choose a robot mower walks those in order. If your lot is small and flat, the sub-quarter-acre cluster in best robot mowers for small yards is the price bracket to read first, keeping in mind that none of those four reaches the top of the standard-cultivar band and the GOAT O1000 RTK cannot reach its 3.5 in floor at all.

Two things are not published anywhere in this set and we will not infer them. No manufacturer we track publishes a grass-species compatibility statement, a St. Augustine specific setting, or any test of blade performance on stoloniferous warm-season turf. And no maker publishes how its mower behaves on the thatch layer UF/IFAS warns St. Augustine builds under high fertilization and irrigation. Those are absences in the datasheets, recorded as absences.

Finally, the UF/IFAS document is written for Florida lawns. The cultivar heights and the robotic-mowing finding are the extension's for that context. If you are growing St. Augustine outside Florida, the mowing heights in this guide are still the best-published figures we found, but your own state extension service is the authority for your conditions, not us and not the mower makers.
