Do pool robots work in Intex and soft-sided frame pools?

An above-ground rating is not one rating. A framed vinyl pool with rigid walls and a snug liner is a different machine problem from a soft-sided or inflatable-top pool, and one manufacturer in our set says so on the record. This guide reads the published pool-type ratings, surface-material statements and working-depth figures for the cleaners we publish pages for against what an Intex-style pool actually presents. Every figure is a manufacturer claim; we have not hardware-tested anything.

Two different pools are both called above-ground

The phrase above-ground covers a range that matters mechanically. At one end sits a framed vinyl pool with steel or resin walls, a fitted liner and a formed cove at the floor-to-wall junction, which behaves for a robot much like a small in-ground vinyl pool. At the other end sits a soft-sided or inflatable-top pool, the Intex-style category, where the wall is a flexible sheet held up by water pressure and an inflated ring or a light frame, and there is no rigid surface to climb.

Manufacturer pool-type ratings do not distinguish between the two. Every maker in our set publishes a single categorical field, in-ground or above-ground or both, and none publishes a sub-rating for soft-sided or inflatable construction, a wall-material matrix, or a compatible-brands list. That absence is the reason this guide exists as a separate piece from our above-ground pool cleaners guide, which reads the same set on coverage, capacity and price. Here the question is narrower: what happens when the wall is not firm.

One maker does address it, and it is the only first-party answer we located.

The soft-wall caveat, as Beatbot documents it

Beatbot answers the question directly in the FAQ of its own above-ground article on beatbot.com. Asked whether a Beatbot will work in a soft-sided or Intex-style above-ground pool, Beatbot states that a framed vinyl above-ground gives a climbing robot the firm wall it needs, that a very soft-sided or inflatable-top pool may not offer that grip, and that a flat pool of that kind is usually fine with a simple floor cleaner. In the same article Beatbot adds that a badly wrinkled or very loose liner, or an unusually soft cove, can defeat any climbing robot, and that the liner rather than the brand is what usually decides whether climbing goes smoothly.

Two scope notes on that source. First, it is a manufacturer article rather than a spec table, so it is a published position, not a datasheet field. Second, the models Beatbot names in that article are largely its Sora line, which we do not publish pages for; of the machines on our roster only the AquaSense 2 Ultra is named. We are citing Beatbot's general statement about climbing robots and soft walls, not extending a rating to any model.

No other maker in our set publishes anything comparable. Aiper, Wybot and Polaris publish pool-type fields and, in two cases, surface materials, but none states what happens on a flexible wall. So the record is one manufacturer saying the grip may not be there, and everyone else silent.

Published pool-type ratings across the set

Seven models we publish pages for carry a manufacturer above-ground rating, and the way each is stated varies. Aiper publishes the Scuba SE as above-ground only, floor mode only, rated to 860 sq ft and a 30 ft maximum pool length, which makes it the one purpose-built above-ground unit in the set. Aiper publishes the Seagull Pro for in-ground and above-ground pools at 1600 sq ft and 50 ft, though its store listing carries a Phase out label, so check its purchase status before acting on that rating. For the Scuba S1 the two Aiper pages disagree with each other: product copy says designed for both above-ground and in-ground, while its own spec table lists in-ground as the ideal pool type. We record both rather than pick one.

Wybot publishes the C2 Vision for in-ground and above-ground use with an ideal pool size up to 2152 sq ft. Beatbot publishes all three AquaSense 2 units, the AquaSense 2, Pro and Ultra, for in-ground and above-ground pools, with the Ultra page adding compatibility with pools of all shapes.

Three active models are published as in-ground only and are out of scope for an Intex pool on their maker's own rating: the Aiper Scuba S1 Pro, the Polaris EPIC 8642 iQ, and the Wybot S2 Solar, whose spec table lists pool classification as outdoor in-ground pool. We do not extend an in-ground rating to an above-ground pool of any construction.

  • Above-ground rated, floor only: Aiper Scuba SE, 860 sq ft and 30 ft maximum length.
  • Above-ground rated, floor plus walls plus waterline: Aiper Scuba S1 (with the page conflict noted), Aiper Seagull Pro, Wybot C2 Vision, Beatbot AquaSense 2.
  • Above-ground rated, five cleaning tasks: Beatbot AquaSense 2 Pro and AquaSense 2 Ultra.
  • In-ground only per the maker: Aiper Scuba S1 Pro, Polaris EPIC 8642 iQ, Wybot S2 Solar.

Surface material, where anyone publishes it

A soft-sided pool is usually a single vinyl or laminated PVC sheet, so the surface-material statement is the closest published proxy for whether a cleaner is meant to touch it. Only two makers in our set publish one. Wybot states that the C2 Vision works on cement, vinyl liner and mosaic surfaces. Beatbot states that its cordless robots are cleared for vinyl liners along with concrete, fiberglass and tile, and describes roller brushes and guide wheels intended to move over a liner without marring it.

Beatbot also publishes the mechanism of the risk, which is more useful than a bare compatibility tick: soft liners can be scratched by hard plaster-grade bristles, snagged by sharp wheels, or lifted by suction that is too strong for a loosely fitted liner. That last one is the failure mode specific to a soft-sided pool, where the wall is not fixed to anything rigid.

Aiper publishes no surface-material list for any of the models we track, and Polaris publishes only that the EPIC 8642 iQ suits in-ground pools up to 50 ft on all surfaces, without enumerating them. For the two Maytronics Dolphins and one Polaris unit that are held from our roster, surface material is moot because they fail our core datasheet bar for other reasons. Where a maker publishes no material statement, we do not infer one from the fact that it sells an above-ground rating.

Depth is the spec most likely to bite

Soft-sided pools are shallow, commonly in the 30 to 52 inch range, and working depth is the one dimension where a published minimum can rule a machine out on its own. Beatbot is the only maker in our set that publishes a minimum at all. It publishes a working depth of 1.6 to 9.8 ft (0.5 to 3 m) for the AquaSense 2, 1.31 to 9.84 ft for the AquaSense 2 Ultra, and 0.5 to 3 m for the AquaSense 2 Pro with a stated minimum of 0.4 m on a shallow shelf.

Read that against a shallow soft-sided pool and the arithmetic gets tight: a 1.6 ft published minimum is about 19 inches, which a 30 inch Intex clears, but the margin narrows fast in a smaller or partly filled pool. Wybot publishes maximum depths only, 13 ft for the C2 Vision and 9.8 ft for the S2 Solar, with no minimum on either page. Aiper publishes no working-depth range for the Scuba SE, Scuba S1, Scuba S1 Pro or Seagull Pro. Polaris publishes a 13 ft maximum and a 15 in minimum for its FREEDOM, which is held from our roster because Polaris publishes no pool capacity for it, so it appears here only to show that the spec exists in the category.

The practical consequence: for most of this set, the depth question cannot be answered from the datasheet. That is a real limit on what anyone can tell you honestly, and it is why we are not producing a ranked list of Intex-friendly robots.

How to read the set for a soft-sided pool

Take the published record for what it is. If your pool is a framed vinyl above-ground with firm walls and a snug liner, the seven above-ground-rated units in this set are rated by their makers for it, and the choice comes down to coverage, capacity and price, which our above-ground pool cleaners guide lays out with prices as published. If your pool is genuinely soft-sided or inflatable-topped, the only manufacturer statement on record says the grip a climbing robot needs may not be there, and points such a pool toward a floor cleaner instead.

On that reading, the Aiper Scuba SE is the one unit in our set whose published coverage matches that description directly: floor mode only, no wall or waterline cleaning, above-ground only, 860 sq ft and a 30 ft maximum length. Note its purchase status before you act on that, since Aiper's US store no longer lists it as purchasable as of our last check on 2026-07-05, and we record no current US list price for it. What we are not going to do is tell you a specific robot will climb your specific soft wall. No maker publishes that, one maker publishes the opposite as a caution, and the surface and depth fields that would let us reason about it are empty on most of the set.
