Aiper Scuba S1 not climbing walls: what the datasheet says it should do
Wall climbing on the Aiper Scuba S1 is a published cleaning mode, not a published performance figure, and that distinction explains most of the disappointment. This guide separates what Aiper's spec table actually claims from the conditions Aiper's own troubleshooting pages say will stop the robot part way up a wall. Every figure comes from Aiper's published material or from the record behind our model page. We have not hardware-tested this cleaner.

What the S1 is published to do, precisely
Aiper publishes the Scuba S1 with three cleaning modes: floor, walls, and waterline. Its product page spec table lists a pool size of 1,600 sq ft (150 m2) and 50 ft (15 m) in length, a 4,200 GPH flow rate, and up to 180 minutes of runtime, with Aiper's own comparison table on the Scuba S1 Pro store page listing the same robot at up to 150 minutes. Filtration is published as a 180 micron fine filter basket plus a 3 micron ultra-fine layer, so the headline 3 micron figure describes the secondary layer rather than the whole filter. The mode selection Aiper documents on that page is Floor Mode, Wall Mode, Automatic, and Periodic or Eco Mode.
What is not on that sheet matters as much. Aiper publishes no wall height rating, no wall-material compatibility list, and no figure for how much of a wall a single cycle covers. Wall cleaning is stated as a capability the machine attempts, and the conditions under which it succeeds live in the troubleshooting pages rather than the spec table. Reading the mode as a guarantee of full-height coverage on any wall is reading more than Aiper published.

Aiper's first documented cause is charge state
Aiper's troubleshooting page for a Scuba S1 that is not cleaning properly addresses the wall symptom directly, under the heading for a robot that only cleans one to two feet of the waterline. Its published statement is that if the S1 is running in Wall mode but not reaching the full wall height it is likely not fully charged, that the S1 requires a full charge to generate enough suction and drive power for wall climbing, and that the robot should be charged until the LED turns solid green before it goes in the pool. The same passage states that deep pools of eight feet or more may require multiple cycles to cover the walls fully.
That is the single most useful sentence Aiper publishes on this symptom, because it converts a vague complaint into a check with a visible pass condition. A partial charge is not a failure state the robot reports; it is a quieter reduction in the drive and suction the climb depends on.
Second cause: the suction path
The same Aiper page states that a partially blocked filter reduces suction power and coverage, and publishes a maintenance interval: remove the filter basket after every two to three cleaning cycles, rinse it under a garden hose, and inspect the mesh for tears. It adds that a torn 180 micron mesh significantly reduces debris capture. Aiper's separate page on the 3 micron micromesh filter describes that layer as capturing sand, algae spores and pet dander.
The mechanical logic Aiper publishes is that the same suction that captures debris is part of what holds the robot against a vertical surface. A basket that has been left for a season is therefore a wall-climbing variable, not only a filtration one.
Third cause: the wrong mode for the pool
Aiper's troubleshooting page is explicit that mode choice changes coverage. It states that adaptive navigation is built into Auto mode on the Scuba S1 rather than existing as a separate Adaptive Path option, recommends Auto mode for irregular, kidney-shaped or deep pools, and says Floor mode uses a fixed grid pattern that may miss corners in non-rectangular pools. It also notes that the S1 does not support custom zone mapping as of firmware version 2.x.
The same page lists two environmental causes for missed areas that apply to walls as much as floors: pool shapes with dead zones the navigation cannot reach, naming L-shaped and T-shaped pools and large shallow-to-deep transitions, and water return jets, which it says can push the S1 off course, with the published suggestion of redirecting the return jet eyeball downward or away from the affected zone during cleaning. Fourth cause: it climbs, then falls
A robot that starts up the wall and drops back is a separate case in Aiper's material. Its Scuba S1 page on the robot getting stuck states that a robot which climbs the wall then stops and falls repeatedly indicates a sensor calibration issue or a slippery wall surface, and lists four actions: perform a factory reset by holding the power button for ten seconds until the LED flashes, check the wall material, naming vinyl and fiberglass, use exclusion zones for problem areas, and update firmware through the Aiper app.
That page also covers the entrapment cases that end a cycle before the walls are reached. It attributes a stuck S1 to debris in the drive wheel, ladder or step entrapment, or beaching on a drain cover, and publishes the drive wheel procedure: power off, flip the robot, clear stones, leaf stems and compacted debris from around the axle with a soft pick, and rotate each wheel by hand to confirm free movement. For ladders it notes that vertical legs create a gap the robot can enter but not exit, and lists exclusion zones, bumpers, ladder mats or barriers, and lowering the water level by two to three inches as options. For drain covers it suggests marking covers that protrude more than one inch as exclusion zones.

Aiper publishes wall cleaning as a mode and publishes conditions that defeat it, but it does not publish a wall-material compatibility matrix, a height the robot is rated to reach, or a coverage figure per cycle. No maker in the set we track publishes a wall-material compatibility matrix for above-ground use either, which is the same limitation from a different angle and one we set out in the above-ground pool guide. The honest reading of the S1 spec is that walls are something the machine is built to attempt under the conditions Aiper describes, and the conditions are the specific part.
One basis note carried from our model record: for the Scuba S1 the above-ground claim appears in Aiper's product copy, which says it is designed for both above-ground and in-ground pools, while the same page's spec table lists in-ground as the ideal pool type. We record both rather than choose. And we publish no success rate for any step above, because Aiper publishes none.
