Robot pool cleaner cleaning modes: what each claim covers

Cleaning modes are how makers state coverage, and they are the spec that separates a floor-only unit from a five-mode flagship. They are also where a robot's headline numbers quietly change meaning, because a runtime measured in one mode says nothing about another. We have not hardware-tested any of these machines. What follows is the published coverage claim for each model, and the caveats each maker prints alongside it.

The five published claims

Every pool cleaner on this site is charted against the same five coverage claims, because those are the ones makers actually publish: floor, walls, waterline, surface, and water clarification. Floor is the baseline. Walls means the machine is stated to climb and clean vertical surfaces. Waterline means it is stated to work the band at the top of the wall where scum collects. Surface means it works the top of the water rather than anything submerged. Water clarification is a treatment claim rather than a scrubbing one, and only Beatbot publishes it.

Two things are worth fixing in mind before reading any model's list. First, a mode claim is a statement about what the robot is built to attempt, not a measured cleaning result, and no maker in our set publishes a pass rate or coverage percentage behind it. Second, the modes named in a maker's app are frequently a longer list than the coverage claim on its spec sheet, and the two are not the same thing. Both points come up repeatedly below.

  • Floor: published by every model we publish a page for.
  • Walls: published by all but one.
  • Waterline: published by all but one.
  • Surface: published by the Beatbot AquaSense 2 Pro and AquaSense 2 Ultra only.
  • Water clarification: published by the same two, with a kit caveat on the Pro.

Floor only versus floor, walls, and waterline

One active model publishes a single mode. The Aiper Scuba SE publishes floor as its only cleaning coverage, with no wall or waterline cleaning, no app connectivity at all, and audio alerts as its only status feedback. It is rated for above-ground pools at 860 Sq.Ft (80 sq m) and 30 ft (9 m) in length on a floor-only basis, and its 180 um Fine Filter Tray and up to 90 minutes of runtime read consistently with that narrower job. A floor-only unit is a real answer for a simple pool, not a defective one, but it is a different product from everything else here.

The rest of the set publishes floor, walls, and waterline together: the Aiper Scuba S1, Aiper Scuba S1 Pro, Aiper Seagull Pro, Wybot C2 Vision, Wybot S2 Solar, Beatbot AquaSense 2, and the corded Polaris EPIC 8642 iQ. Aiper puts the most marketing weight on the waterline of that group, describing the Scuba S1 Pro as the first cordless robot with 60 second lateral horizontal waterline cleaning; that is Aiper's claim, published without a test basis.

Where a wall claim exists, its limits are usually unpublished. Aiper's own pages give three different wall-angle figures for the Scuba S1 Pro, with marketing copy citing 115 degree sloped walls, a spec callout on the same page citing climbing ability of 90 degrees plus or minus 15, and the official store page citing 140 degrees plus or minus 10, so we chart none of them. Surface and water clarification

Two models publish all five claims: the Beatbot AquaSense 2 Pro and the Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra, both covering floor, walls, waterline, surface, and water clarification. Beatbot markets the Ultra as 5-in-1 on top of that coverage. The base AquaSense 2 is explicitly not in that group: Beatbot lists water surface cleaning and ClearWater clarification as not available on the base model, which is the clean line between the two, and the AquaSense 2 vs AquaSense 2 Pro comparison walks it.

The clarification claim carries a purchase caveat that the mode list does not show. Beatbot states that the water-clarification mode on the AquaSense 2 Pro requires the AquaRefine clarifier kit, sold separately at about $59.99, so five published modes is not five modes out of the box. Surface cleaning also changes how the robot behaves outside a cleaning cycle: Beatbot publishes that the Pro automatically returns and parks on the water surface after cleaning or when the battery is low, with app remote control available on the water surface only. The app mode list is not the coverage claim

Almost every maker publishes two different mode counts, and the larger one is usually the app's menu rather than the machine's coverage. Wybot publishes eight named cleaning modes in the app for the C2 Vision while its manufacturer coverage claim is floors, walls, and waterline, and publishes seven cleaning modes in the app for the S2 Solar against the same three-surface coverage claim. Beatbot publishes six cleaning modes selectable in the app for the AquaSense 2 Pro against five charted coverage tasks. Those extra entries are scheduling, intensity, and routing options, not additional parts of the pool.

Aiper publishes its mode menus in a way that is easier to line up. The Scuba S1 Pro publishes mode selection as Floor, Wall, Waterline, Auto, and Eco, marketed as 4+1 modes, with Wall Only listed as app exclusive. The Scuba S1 publishes Floor Mode, Wall Mode, Automatic, and Periodic/Eco Mode. The Seagull Pro is the odd one: its coverage claim is floor, walls, and waterline, but the three modes Aiper offers are Auto (floor plus wall), floor only, and wall only, with no separately selectable waterline mode published and no app control at all. We record both what Aiper claims for coverage and what its mode list contains, without reconciling them.

On the corded side the modes come with durations attached. Polaris publishes 2:30 for the floor, wall and waterline mode on the EPIC 8642 iQ and 1:30 for floor only, with plus or minus time adjustment in the iAquaLink app. That is the most legible mode publication in the set, because each named mode carries its own published cycle length.

A per-mode figure is not a machine figure

Once modes are on the table, the runtime numbers have to be read through them, and this is where the category gets least comparable. Beatbot publishes no general runtime for any of its three models, only mode-specific claims. The AquaSense 2 Pro publishes up to 11 hours of continuous surface cleaning and nothing for underwater work. The AquaSense 2 publishes up to 4 hours of continuous floor cleaning from a 10,000 mAh battery, a floor-only basis that excludes walls and waterline. The AquaSense 2 Ultra publishes three at once: up to 10 hours continuous surface cleaning, up to 5 hours floor cleaning, and up to 4.5 hours walls plus waterline cleaning.

The Ultra makes the arithmetic of the problem visible. On Beatbot's own figures, one battery yields 10 hours in one mode and 4.5 hours in another, so a surface-only runtime is not a general runtime and we do not chart it as one. The same treatment applies to the Pro's 11 hour claim: it describes work at the surface, which is the least demanding mode published, and reading it as whole-pool endurance would overstate the machine by a wide margin. This site records those as non-comparable rather than converting them.

Cordless models that publish a general runtime carry a lighter version of the same caveat. Wybot quotes the C2 Vision's up to 180 minutes in Eco Mode, so heavier modes run shorter, and states no mode basis at all for the S2 Solar's up to 150 mins working cycle. Aiper publishes the Scuba S1 Pro at up to 180 minutes with the mode unspecified. Cycle time is unpublished across the Beatbot line entirely, and Aiper publishes no fixed cycle time for the Scuba S1 Pro or Seagull Pro because cleaning is battery limited.

Matching modes to the debris you have

Work backwards from the pool rather than up the mode count. If the debris is heavy leaf and grit on the bottom of a simple pool, a floor claim is the one that matters and the Aiper Scuba SE publishes exactly that and nothing more. If the pool grows a scum band, the waterline claim is the one to check, and nine of the ten models we publish pages for carry it. If leaves land and float before they sink, a surface claim is what addresses that, and only the two Beatbot flagships publish one.

Then read the modes against the rest of the sheet, because a coverage claim tells you nothing about how long the machine sustains it or how fine a particle it holds.
