Fall leaves vs pool robots: debris capacity by model
In leaf season the limiting spec on a pool robot stops being runtime and becomes basket volume, because a full basket does not simply stop collecting: every maker in this set documents it as the cause of a robot that will not climb, will not resurface, or floats. Seven of the ten pool cleaners we publish pages for have a manufacturer-published basket volume, ranging from 2 L to 7 L. Three do not, and that is a finding in its own right. Every figure below is a manufacturer claim; we have not tested any of these machines.

- Aiper Seagull Prothe largest published basket among the pool robots we publish pages for
Aiper publishes a top-load 7 L basket, the largest published volume of the ten pool cleaners we publish pages for. The tradeoffs are published too: a single 180 micron layer with no ultra-fine secondary, up to 150 minutes of runtime, no app control, and a store listing that still carried Aiper's phase out label at our check on 2026-08-06, when the page rendered no add to cart control.

A published 5 L top-load debris basket, second largest in our set, behind a two-level filter published as 180 micron plus a 3 micron MicroMesh layer. Rated by Aiper for in-ground pools up to 2150 sq ft with up to 180 minutes of runtime, mode unspecified, under Aiper's controlled-test-environment disclaimer. Aiper's store page still carried a phase out label on 2026-08-06.
- Polaris EPIC 8642 iQseeing the canister is full without pulling the machine out
A published 4 L (about 1.1 gal) canister with a transparent full-canister window, the only fill indicator anyone in this set publishes. Being corded, it runs a fixed 2 hour 30 minute floor, wall and waterline cycle rather than a battery that drains faster as the basket loads. Polaris publishes no micron rating and no flow rate for it.

A published 3.7 L basket behind a two-layer 150 plus 250 micron filter, plus a published water-surface cleaning mode with an up-to-11-hours continuous surface runtime claim. Beatbot publishes no whole-pool runtime for the model, only mode-specific maxima, and its 5500 GPH suction figure is a peak internal-lab number by its own footnote.
Published basket volume, model by model
Basket capacity is the spec makers publish least consistently, which is why the list below has holes in it. Where a volume exists it comes from the maker's own spec table or FAQ, and it is a stated capacity, not a measured one, and not a leaf count.
Aiper publishes the most complete set and the largest single figure. The Seagull Pro is published with a top-load 7 L basket, the Scuba S1 Pro with a top-load 5 L debris basket, the Scuba S1 with a 3.5 L basket, and the Scuba SE with a 2 L chassis tray rather than a lift-out basket. Polaris publishes filter canister capacity for the EPIC 8642 iQ as 4 L (about 1.1 gal) and pairs it with something no other maker in this set offers: a transparent window so you can see the canister is full without opening the machine. Beatbot publishes 3.7 L for the AquaSense 2 Pro and 2 L for the AquaSense 2.
The three gaps are Wybot's two models and Beatbot's flagship. Wybot's official user manuals, downloaded today from the wybotpool.com download page, publish a full device specification table for both the C2 Vision and the S2 Solar, covering pool size, depth, dimensions, weight, runtime, charge time, power, battery capacity, moving speed and IP rating. Neither table has a basket-volume row. Filtration is listed as 180 micron plus ultra-fine filter for the C2 Vision and simply as double-level for the S2 Solar. For the AquaSense 2 Ultra, Beatbot publishes the filter architecture (larger baskets at 150 plus 250 micron, thinner baskets at 250 micron) but no volume, and its help center, which does answer the basket-size question for the previous-generation AquaSense and AquaSense Pro, has no such entry for the AquaSense 2 line.

What the makers actually claim about leaves
Only Beatbot names leaves directly in its own support documentation for the models we publish. Its help center answers the debris-type question for the AquaSense 2, AquaSense 2 Pro and AquaSense 2 Ultra with the same line: the two-layer filter (150 plus 250 micron) can effectively capture debris of all sizes, including leaves, hair, sand, insects and more, and can filter particles as small as 150 micrometers. That is a claim about what fits through the mesh, not about how much of it the basket holds, and Beatbot draws the distinction itself elsewhere, noting that particles under 150 micrometers including fine sand pass straight through and are expelled through the water outlet.
Aiper and Wybot make no leaf-specific claim for the models we publish. Aiper's Seagull Pro documentation describes the filtration spec as 180 micron and the basket as top load 7 L, without characterising debris types. Wybot's manuals go the other way and warn you off the fine layer in dirty water: the C2 and C2 Vision manual describes the ultra-fine filter as auxiliary, recommends it in turbo floor mode only, and instructs that it should not be installed when the floor is heavily soiled because it may influence the operation of the cleaner. The S2 Solar manual repeats that for the cotton foam layer when the pool water is heavy dusty. In leaf season, on a Wybot, the fine layer comes out.
Polaris publishes the sharpest category-level statement about leaves, but it is about a different product line. On its pool-cleaners overview, Polaris says pressure pool cleaners collect larger items like leaves, acorns and pebbles into an internal debris receptacle, capturing debris before it reaches the filter. We publish pages for robotic cleaners only, so that claim is context rather than a competing spec; the mechanism differences are traced in our guide on robotic vs suction vs pressure cleaners.
What a full basket does to the machine
This is the part of leaf season that owners report as a navigation fault and the makers document as a filter fault. Beatbot's help center answers the question my robot is unable to climb walls, identically for all three AquaSense 2 models, with: the most common factor affecting wall-climbing performance is debris accumulation in the filter basket. It gives the same first cause for a robot that will not return to the surface, calling a clogged filter basket the most common reason. And in its battery-drain entry it closes the loop explicitly: a full filter basket or clogged filter mesh can reduce climbing power, causing the robot to repeatedly attempt climbing and use more battery. The Beatbot app raises a dedicated notification for it, reading that the filter basket is clogged.
Wybot's troubleshooting tables say the same thing four different ways. In the C2 and C2 Vision manual: does not climb walls, cause too dirty water, fix clean the filter basket; abnormal wall climbing with the detail climbing slowly, cause filter basket blocked; sinking down away from wall or floating on the water, cause filter basket blocked; and front side up when on the floor, cause filter basket blocked. The S2 Solar manual lists the front part raises frequently against a full filtration basket, and cannot clean the wall against heavy dirty pool water and against use of the cotton foam.
Polaris documents the buoyancy version of the same failure for the corded EPIC. Its owner's manual troubleshooting table gives the filter canister is full or dirty as the cause for three separate symptoms: the cleaner does not stay on the pool surface or is floating excessively, the cleaner is not climbing walls, and the cleaner is not cleaning the pool effectively. The instruction attached to all three is to dispose of the debris and clean the canister thoroughly with mild soap and a soft brush, and Polaris separately instructs cleaning the filter canister after each use.
Micron rating is not capacity
The two specs get conflated constantly, and in leaf season they pull in opposite directions. Micron rating describes the smallest particle a layer retains; basket volume describes how much material the machine can carry before it stops behaving normally. A robot with a very fine secondary layer and a small basket is optimised for the opposite season from the one you are in.
Among the models we publish, the finest published layers belong to Aiper's Scuba S1 and Scuba S1 Pro, both listing a 3 micron MicroMesh ultra-fine filter behind a 180 micron basket. Wybot's C2 Vision publishes 180 micron plus a 10 micron ultra-fine layer. Beatbot's three models publish 150 micron as the finest layer. The S2 Solar publishes 180 micron plus a 40 ppi sponge, the Seagull Pro a single 180 micron layer with no ultra-fine secondary, and the Scuba SE a 180 micron fine filter tray. Polaris publishes no micron rating for the EPIC 8642 iQ at all, which is why our filtration comparisons cannot chart it on that axis.
Beatbot's own answer to owners who want finer capture is instructive about the tradeoff. Rather than claiming the 150 micron basket catches everything, its help center states that anything smaller passes through and offers an optional aftermarket basket rated to capture particles as small as 60 micrometers, supplied on request. Finer capture is available; it is not the default, and nothing in the record suggests it is what you want under a maple tree in October. Surface skimmers and the models we do not publish
Both Beatbot and Aiper sell dedicated surface skimmers whose published baskets dwarf the underwater cleaners, and both are held out of our comparison set. Beatbot publishes a 9 L basket and a 380 micron filter for the iSkim Ultra, with support copy claiming effective removal of hair, leaves, branches, flowers, grass, seeds and pollen. Aiper publishes a 4 L enclosed pull-out basket with a 150 micron filter for the EcoSurfer S2. Neither is on our site, and the reason is the same for both: neither maker publishes a numeric pool-size capacity for the model, which our spec bar requires, so we do not publish pages for them and do not link them.
The distinction matters for leaf season because it is a duty-cycle difference, not just a capacity one. A skimmer works the water surface, where leaves arrive before they waterlog and sink; an underwater cleaner works the floor, where they end up. Of the models we do publish, the AquaSense 2 Pro and AquaSense 2 Ultra are the only ones with surface among their published cleaning modes, and Beatbot publishes their surface runtime separately from their floor runtime for exactly that reason.
Where the record has gaps
Three of the ten pool robots we publish pages for have no manufacturer-published basket volume, and two of those three are current, well-documented models with otherwise complete spec tables. Wybot fills in eighteen specification rows for the C2 Vision and the S2 Solar and omits this one. Beatbot published the figure for its previous generation, in the help center entries for the AquaSense and AquaSense Pro, and stopped publishing it for the AquaSense 2 line. Neither omission looks like an oversight in a table that is otherwise thorough, but we have no basis to say why, and we are not going to substitute a number we measured off a photograph.
The deeper gap is that basket volume in litres is not the specification an owner actually needs. Nobody publishes a leaf capacity, a cycles-per-fill figure, or a debris-load rating on any measurement basis. Nobody publishes at what fill percentage climbing performance starts to degrade, even though three of the four makers name a full basket as the leading cause of climbing failure. Polaris is alone in giving owners any direct read on the problem, via the transparent full-canister window, and even that is a look-and-judge feature rather than a published threshold.
