Pool opening day: the first-clean sequence with a robot

Opening day is the hardest cycle a pool robot runs all year: cold water, a season of debris on the floor, and a chemical dose in the water. Four of the makers behind the pool cleaners we publish pages for document at least part of that situation, and they do not agree on the numbers. Below is what each publishes, cited per brand, then a sequence built only from those published steps. We have not tested any of these machines; every figure here is a manufacturer's claim read from its own manual, spec table or support page.

Published water conditions, by brand

Three of the four makers print an operating-conditions table, and the temperature floors differ by 14 degrees F. Aiper publishes the same water conditions block in the user manuals for all four models we cover (the Seagull Pro manual is linked from Aiper's US safety-precautions page, and the Scuba S1, S1 Pro and SE manuals from Aiper's own product documentation hub, all hosted on Aiper's CDN): water temperature 50 to 95 degrees F (10 to 35 degrees C), pH 7.0 to 7.4, chlorine maximum 4 ppm and NaCl maximum 5000 ppm. Wybot's combined C2 and C2 Vision user manual, downloaded from the wybotpool.com download page, publishes chlorine maximum 4 mg/L, pH 7.0 to 7.8, temperature 41 to 95 degrees F (5 to 35 degrees C) and NaCl maximum 5000 ppm. The Wybot S2 Solar manual carries the same four-row table.

Polaris sets the highest floor of the three. The EPIC series owner's manual (document H0699900, served from Fluidra's US CDN and covering the EPIC 8642 iQ) instructs: do not use the product in your pool if the water temperature is above 95 degrees F (35 degrees C) or below 55 degrees F (13 degrees C). All three agree on the 95 degrees F ceiling and diverge only at the bottom, which is exactly the end that matters in April.

Beatbot is the outlier in what it does not print. Its help center answers saltwater and chlorine questions for the AquaSense 2 line, stating the robots can be used in saltwater up to 5000 ppm and chlorine no higher than 4 ppm, but it publishes no water-temperature operating range for the AquaSense 2, AquaSense 2 Pro or AquaSense 2 Ultra. The only temperature band Beatbot puts in writing sits in a blog article, where it says 50 to 95 degrees F (10 to 35 degrees C) is the usual operating band for most robots, a general-category statement rather than a spec for its own hardware.

  • Aiper (manuals for all four models we cover): 50 to 95 degrees F, pH 7.0 to 7.4, chlorine max 4 ppm, NaCl max 5000 ppm.
  • Wybot (C2 and C2 Vision manual, same table in the S2 Solar manual): 41 to 95 degrees F, pH 7.0 to 7.8, chlorine max 4 mg/L, NaCl max 5000 ppm.
  • Polaris (EPIC owner's manual H0699900): do not use below 55 degrees F or above 95 degrees F.
  • Beatbot (help center): saltwater up to 5000 ppm, chlorine no higher than 4 ppm; no water-temperature range published for the AquaSense 2 line.

Running after a shock

Two makers publish an instruction here and they are not the same instruction. Polaris puts a flat rule in the EPIC owner's manual: always remove the cleaner from the pool when super chlorinating or adding acid. The troubleshooting table in the same manual repeats it under the entry for a cleaner that will not climb walls, telling the owner to confirm appropriate pool chemistry and not to leave the cleaner in the pool during any chemical treatments. That is a removal rule, not a waiting rule; Polaris publishes no re-entry threshold at all.

Beatbot publishes the re-entry thresholds, in a blog article rather than a manual. It states plainly that you should not run a robotic pool cleaner during or immediately after shocking, and gives the targets it wants before the robot goes back in: free chlorine at 5 ppm or less, combined chlorine under 0.5 ppm, pH 7.2 to 7.8, cyanuric acid typically 30 to 60 ppm outdoors, and water visibly clear with no flocculant residue. On timing it declines to give a number, saying there is no one timer that fits every pool because dose, cyanuric acid, sunlight and water temperature all matter, and that many pools drop below 5 ppm within 12 to 24 hours in sunny weather. It adds three procedural steps: rinse the robot before the first post-shock run, start with a clean filter basket, and shorten the first cycle to 60 to 90 minutes if you normally run 2 to 3 hours, then pull it and check the basket.

Note the pH disagreement that falls out of this. Beatbot's post-shock target of 7.2 to 7.8 sits inside Wybot's published 7.0 to 7.8 operating window but runs off the top of Aiper's published 7.0 to 7.4. If you own an Aiper and follow a generic 7.2 to 7.8 pool-chemistry target, you are at or past your own manual's stated ceiling. We are not adjudicating that. Each figure is that maker's instruction for its own hardware.

Water level and the pump question

Opening day usually means a pool refilled to somewhere below its normal line, and the robots have published minimums. Wybot's C2 and C2 Vision manual instructs that for optimal cleaning performance the water depth should be at least 19.5 in (50 cm) above the top of the device, and its troubleshooting table treats water that is too shallow as a fault condition: a flashing red light with the cause listed as not put in the water or the pool water is too shallow, and the fix as making sure depth is over 0.5 m. Polaris takes the same problem from the other side, instructing that you always fully submerge the cleaner head before you begin operation, and noting that the cleaner includes a safety feature that automatically stops it if a cycle starts while it is not submerged.

Beatbot publishes working depth as a range rather than a minimum clearance. Its spec pages give 1.6 to 9.8 ft (0.5 to 3 m) for the AquaSense 2, 0.5 to 3 m with a 0.4 m minimum on a shallow shelf for the AquaSense 2 Pro, and 1.31 to 9.84 ft for the AquaSense 2 Ultra. Those are different measurement bases from Wybot's clearance-above-the-machine figure, so they are not directly comparable.

The pump instruction is the one most likely to surprise a new owner, because it inverts what a suction or pressure cleaner requires. Wybot's manuals for both the C2 Vision and the S2 Solar list, under cautions that can damage the device, do not operate the cleaner while pool filter is running. Aiper's Seagull Pro manual carries the same instruction in its safety precautions: do not operate your Aiper pool cleaner and pool filter simultaneously. Beatbot publishes no such prohibition, and its post-shock article assumes the pump is doing the mixing, saying the pump handles mixing and the robot only cleans surfaces. On opening day, when circulation is what clears the water, those two positions pull in opposite directions.

Setting up for a heavy first load

Every one of these robots ships with more than one filter layer, and Wybot is the only maker that tells you to take one out for a dirty pool. Its C2 and C2 Vision manual describes the ultra-fine filter as an auxiliary filter, recommends using it in turbo floor mode only, and instructs: please do not install it when the floor is heavily soiled, it may influence the operation of the cleaner. The S2 Solar manual repeats the warning for the cotton foam layer, saying not to install it when the pool water is heavy dusty, and its troubleshooting table lists use cotton foam as a cause of the robot failing to climb walls, with remove cotton foam as the fix. On the models we publish, the layer in question is the 10 micron ultra-fine filter on the C2 Vision and the 40 ppi sponge behind the 180 micron basket on the S2 Solar.

Aiper and Beatbot publish no equivalent remove-the-fine-layer instruction, which leaves their fine layers in place on the dirtiest cycle of the year. The Scuba S1 and Scuba S1 Pro both pair a 180 micron filter basket with a 3 micron MicroMesh ultra-fine layer, and Beatbot publishes a two-layer 150 plus 250 micron basket on the AquaSense 2 Pro and AquaSense 2 Ultra. Beatbot's own help center is candid about what the coarse rating means in practice: particles smaller than 150 micrometers, including fine sand, will pass through the mesh and be expelled through the water outlet, and it offers an optional aftermarket 60 micron basket to owners who ask.

Two smaller first-day items are documented and easy to miss. Wybot's manual says to charge the unit before first use, and Aiper's says to fully charge the cleaner before using it to clean your pool, so neither treats a factory charge as usable. And on the C2 Vision specifically, Wybot instructs that the front camera is protected by a film from the factory that must be peeled off before running dirt-hunting mode, and that the mode reaches its best targeted cleaning performance after one month of cleaning, so a first-day judgement of that feature is judging it early by the maker's own account.

How long the first cycle actually runs

The runtime figures on these machines are published on different measurement bases, and opening day is where that bites, because the heaviest load draws the shortest cycle. Beatbot publishes no whole-pool runtime for any AquaSense 2 model. What it publishes is mode-specific: up to 4 hours of continuous floor cleaning for the AquaSense 2, up to 11 hours of continuous surface cleaning for the AquaSense 2 Pro, and for the AquaSense 2 Ultra a set of three, up to 10 hours for surface, up to 5 hours for floor and up to 4.5 hours for walls plus waterline. None of those is a figure for a full floor, wall and waterline pass.

The cordless Aiper and Wybot models publish single up-to numbers with caveats attached. Aiper publishes up to 180 minutes for the Scuba S1 in its product-page spec table, while Aiper's own comparison table on the Scuba S1 Pro store page lists the S1 at up to 150 minutes; the Scuba S1 Pro is published at up to 180 minutes with the mode unspecified, under Aiper's disclaimer that figures were obtained in a controlled test environment or from Aiper Laboratories. Wybot publishes up to 180 minutes for the C2 Vision and quotes that figure in Eco mode, so heavier modes run shorter, and up to 150 minutes for the S2 Solar with no mode basis stated. The Seagull Pro is published at up to 150 minutes and the Scuba SE at up to 90 minutes.

Polaris is the only one of the four that publishes a fixed cycle rather than a battery limit, because the EPIC 8642 iQ is corded: 2 hours 30 minutes for the floor, wall and waterline mode and 1 hour 30 minutes for floor only, with plus or minus adjustment in the iAquaLink app. On an opening-day pool that difference in kind matters more than the difference in minutes: a corded machine that runs out its cycle is not competing with a battery that is also being drained by repeated climbing attempts against a loading basket. The opening-day sequence

Built only from the published steps above. Where two makers disagree, both figures are named; use the one belonging to the machine you own.

  • Check water temperature against your own maker's floor before anything else: 41 degrees F (Wybot), 50 degrees F (Aiper), 55 degrees F (Polaris). All three publish the same 95 degrees F ceiling.
  • Fill to depth. Wybot wants at least 19.5 in (50 cm) of water above the top of the machine and treats under 0.5 m as a fault; Polaris wants the cleaner head fully submerged before the cycle starts and stops the machine automatically if it is not.
  • Do the chemistry before the robot, not with it. Polaris instructs you to remove the cleaner from the pool when super chlorinating or adding acid, and not to leave it in during any chemical treatment.
  • If you shocked, wait on test results rather than a clock. Beatbot's published re-entry targets are free chlorine 5 ppm or less, combined chlorine under 0.5 ppm, pH 7.2 to 7.8, and clear water with no floc residue. Check that pH figure against your own manual: Aiper publishes a 7.0 to 7.4 ceiling.
  • If you used flocculant, vacuum to waste first. Beatbot's guidance is that floc clumps are meant to be vacuumed out, not recirculated, and that a robot will stir them back up and load its filter in minutes.
  • Charge fully before the first cycle (Wybot, Aiper both publish this as a first-use step, not a suggestion).
  • Take the fine layer out for the first pass if you own a Wybot: the ultra-fine filter on the C2 and C2 Vision, the cotton foam on the S2 Solar. No other maker in this set publishes an equivalent instruction.
  • Peel the factory film off the front camera before running dirt-hunting mode (Wybot C2 Vision only).
  • Run the pool pump separately, not simultaneously, if you own a Wybot or an Aiper. Both publish that instruction. Beatbot does not.
  • Run a short first cycle and check the basket. Beatbot suggests 60 to 90 minutes against a normal 2 to 3 hours, then pull, rinse and decide on a second pass.
  • Empty and rinse the basket after every cycle. Polaris instructs cleaning the filter canister after each cleaning cycle and periodically deep-cleaning it with soapy water and a soft brush; Wybot instructs washing the basket and the ultra-fine filter after each use.
  • Take the machine out when the cycle ends. Polaris states directly that the cleaner should not be left in the pool on a permanent basis and should be removed at the end of each cycle.

Where the record has gaps

The wait time after a shock is the biggest one, and it is worth being blunt about it. No maker in this set publishes a wait-time number in a manual. The only figures we found anywhere are in a Beatbot blog article, and Beatbot itself frames them as a rough guide while telling you to use testing rather than guesswork. Any article that hands you a confident number of hours to wait before dropping a robot into a freshly shocked pool is not quoting a manufacturer, because the manufacturers have not written one down.

Two secondary gaps follow from that. First, none of the four publishes what actually happens to the machine if you run it outside the stated chemistry, so the practical stakes behind a 4 ppm chlorine ceiling or a 7.4 pH ceiling are not documented; Beatbot's blog gestures at seals, connectors and warranty claims in general terms without data. Second, Beatbot publishes no water-temperature operating range at all for the AquaSense 2 line, so owners of the three Beatbot models we publish have no maker-stated cold-water floor to check against on opening day.
