Robot mower will not return to its dock: a systematic diagnosis
A mower that will not come home is at least four different faults wearing one symptom, and the three makers we can source here document them in separate articles with different remedies. This guide organises those published causes into a diagnosis tree so you can find the branch you are on before you start changing things. Every step below is attributed to the manufacturer support article that publishes it. We have not hardware-tested any of these machines.

Name the failure before you fix anything
The support articles split cleanly once you separate the moment the process broke. Branch A is a mower that never had a route home, because the map does not connect the working area to the station. Branch B is a mower that set off and ran out of energy or got trapped on the way. Branch C is a mower that arrived at the wrong place, because positioning drifted or the station moved. Branch D is a mower that physically arrived and did not charge. Husqvarna, Segway and Mammotion each publish material on more than one of those branches, and the fixes do not transfer between them.
One scope note. Husqvarna's articles cover both wire and wire-free installations, so some of its causes name a guide wire. The Husqvarna Automower 420 iQ we publish a page for is documented as using EPOS satellite virtual boundaries with onboard radar, with a physical boundary wire also supported, so the wire branches apply only if yours is installed that way. Mammotion's knowledge base articles quoted here sit in its YUKA mini and LUBA sections, which map to the Mammotion YUKA mini 2 1000H and the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD 3000.
Branch A: there is no route home in the map
Mammotion states this one flatly. Its knowledge base article on setting a mowing task instructs owners to ensure a channel is created between task areas or between a task area and the charging station, and says that without it the robot will not be able to automatically return for charging when the battery is low. The same article's preparation list requires the robot to be at the charging station or inside the task area before mowing, and to be moved there manually if it is not. Mammotion's recharge article repeats the constraint from the other direction: when performing the recharge function, the robot must be in the task area.
Mammotion also documents two return behaviours, Direct and Follow the Perimeter, describing Direct as taking the shortest route back to the charging station and Follow the Perimeter as driving the perimeter home. That matters when the shortest line crosses ground the machine will not cross.
Husqvarna's article on the Empty battery message covers the same branch with different vocabulary. Its listed causes include obstacles and stay-out zones blocking the path to the charging station, an incorrectly configured search setting, which it locates in the Automower Connect app under Menu, Settings, Installation, Find charging station, and Secondary Area mode being selected instead of Main Area mode. On that last one Husqvarna is explicit that after mowing a secondary area the mower has to be placed back in the main area manually with the correct area mode selected.

- Husqvarna: stay-out zones and obstacles across the path to the station are a published cause of the Empty battery message.

Branch B: it started home and did not make it
Segway's Navimow i article on a mower failing to return to the charging station puts this first: check whether the mower has encountered obstacles or become stuck on its way back, and notes that in some cases the mower may run out of battery before reaching the station. Husqvarna frames the same outcome as a named error, stating that the Empty battery message appears when the mower does not have sufficient battery capacity to locate the charging station.
Mammotion adds a setting that can create this branch on purpose. In its mowing task article, the Sensitive level of obstacle avoidance is described as making the robot proactively avoid obstacles and non-grassy areas, reducing the risk of falling or leaving the lawn, with the stated trade-off that some dried-out patches may be missed and could also block the returning path. A dry patch in the middle of the route home is, at that setting, a documented reason the mower cannot get through.
The diagnostic tell for this branch is location. If you keep finding the machine part way home rather than at the station or out in the working area, the failure is transit, not mapping and not docking.
Branch C: it went to the wrong place
Segway's i series article on failed returns lists two causes that produce an arrival at the wrong spot. The first is a change in the location of the charging station or the antenna, which it says can disrupt the mower's ability to return, and for which the published remedy is to delete the existing map and create a new one. The second is a poor positioning signal, which it says can lead the mower to return to the wrong location. A dirty VisionFence camera appears in the same article as a navigation risk. Where the problem recurs, Segway's stated sequence is to delete the map, relocate both the antenna and the charging station to better positions, and build a new map.
Mammotion publishes the most granular positioning diagnostic of the three. Its article on the positioning information shown under POS in the app defines four statuses: Fix, described as fine positioning with accuracy under 10 cm and up to 2 cm in a good open-sky area, which permits automatic mowing; Float, described as bad positioning with accuracy of about 50 to 200 cm; Single, described as bad positioning at metre level; and None, no positioning. It states that automatic mowing is not possible in Float, Single or None. The same article says that co-viewed satellite counts above 20 on both L1 and L2 are normally good for stable RTK positioning, that weak signal quality can leave the status at Float even with more than 20 co-viewed satellites, and that if the robot is on the charging station the station should be set in a more open-sky area.
Read together, the two makers are saying the same thing in different words: the dock has to sit somewhere the machine can be sure where it is. A station tucked against a wall or under a canopy is a positioning decision, not just a tidy place to put the base.
Branch D: it docked and did not charge
Husqvarna's article on a mower that will not charge or keeps leaving the charging station gives the most complete published checklist. It starts with the charging station light, routing an unlit station and a solid red station to their own articles. It then instructs owners to check the docking contact, making sure the mower sits squarely in the station with the charging plates making full contact, and to remove leaves, grass clippings and debris from the docking area and from the contacts on both the mower and the station. Third is battery temperature, with the statement that the mower will not charge if the battery temperature is outside the accepted range. Fourth is the post-winter case: a mower stored without a full charge may be too deeply discharged to begin charging normally, for which the published step is to bring it indoors, place it on the station and leave it for several hours.
For a mower that repeatedly fails to seat, Husqvarna's Charging station blocked article lists the causes it attributes to that message: obstructions in the docking path such as leaves, toys or garden debris; uneven ground under the charging station, where it advises levelling with sand or soil; oxidation on the contact plates or charging strips, to be cleaned with a fine abrasive pad or contact cleaner; loose or damaged power cable connections at the station; and a faulty circuit board or signal issue, which routes to a dealer. For boundary wire installations it adds two more: an incorrect guide wire layout, where it specifies a straight line of at least 2 m (7 ft) in front of the station, and loose or damaged guide wires under the station.
Segway's i series charging article covers the same branch for Navimow hardware with five causes: a charging station that is not powered, checked at the plug and outlet when the station light is off; a hardware fault, if the plug and outlet are fine but the light stays off; blocked or dirty charging strips on the station, indicated when the station light is on but stays blue; a blocked or dirty charging port on the mower; and extreme temperature, where Segway says a charging protection icon appears in the Navimow app if the environmental temperature falls outside the recommended range. Its separate article on a solid red station light states that the red light indicates no communication connection between the station and the mower, that the station shows red if the mower is not powered on, and that environmental interference can cause short-term red that clears by itself.
- Contacts and seating: both makers publish debris on the plates or an off-square dock as a primary cause.
- Temperature: Husqvarna and Segway both publish a temperature limit on charging, with Segway noting an in-app charging protection icon.
- Ground under the station: Husqvarna names slight dips as a misalignment cause and advises levelling.
- Deep discharge after winter storage: Husqvarna's published step is several hours on the station indoors.
- Wire installations only: Husqvarna specifies a straight guide wire run of at least 2 m (7 ft) in front of the station.
What the spec sheets add
Two published figures change which branch is likely on a given lawn. The first is the boundary slope limit, because a station placed at the bottom of a grade means the last stretch of the route home is the hardest ground on the property. Segway publishes the Navimow i110N at 30 percent (17 degrees) in the working area and 10 percent (6 degrees) at the boundary, the Navimow X350 at 50 percent (27 degrees) and 25 percent (14 degrees), and Husqvarna publishes the Automower 420 iQ at 45 percent inside the installation and 15 percent at the boundary. The second is charge and runtime, since branch B is an energy failure. Segway publishes 200 minutes full-charge mowing time and 80 minutes charging for the X350 and describes those as internal lab testing, Mammotion publishes 175 minutes and 120 minutes for the LUBA 3 AWD 3000, and Husqvarna publishes a typical mow time of 84 minutes and typical charging time of 54 minutes for the 420 iQ. Two coverage limits on this guide are worth stating. Segway's help center published i series and H series troubleshooting sections when we checked on 2026-08-06, with no X series section found, so X350 owners are working from articles written against other hardware. And where a symptom persists after a documented sequence, all three makers route to after-sales service rather than to a further self-fix, which is where this guide stops too.
