Robot pool cleaner runtime and battery: reading the published figures

Runtime is the spec cordless buyers shop on and the one makers publish most loosely. The same store page can carry two different figures for the same robot, a headline hour count can describe a single cleaning mode, and several well-specced machines publish no general runtime at all. We have not hardware-tested any of these machines, so this guide reads only what the manufacturers print, with the basis each one states.

Runtime and cycle time are different measurements

A cordless cleaner publishes a battery runtime: how long the machine can work before the pack is spent. A corded cleaner publishes a cycle time: how long its programmed cleaning routine runs before it stops. These look alike on a comparison table and mean nothing alike. A runtime is a hard energy limit set by the battery; a cycle time is a default the maker chose, and on the Polaris EPIC 8642 iQ it is adjustable, published as 2:30 for the floor, wall and waterline mode and 1:30 for floor only, with plus or minus time adjustment in the iAquaLink app.

So the first question is which number you are actually reading. Polaris publishes no battery runtime and no charge time for the EPIC 8642 iQ, and that is correct rather than missing: the machine has no battery. Its equivalent constraint is the published 60 ft cable. Every other model we publish a page for is cordless, and for those the runtime, the charge time, and the mode each figure was measured in are what decide whether a session finishes.

  • Battery runtime: a cordless energy ceiling, published as an up-to figure by every maker we track.
  • Cycle time: a programmed routine length, published by Polaris in hours and minutes and adjustable in-app.
  • Charge time: the recharge window between sessions, published in hours.
  • Per-mode runtime: a maximum for one named mode, not a whole-pool figure.

The published cordless runtimes

Six cordless models we publish pages for carry a general runtime figure, and they cluster into three tiers. At the top, three publish up to 180 minutes: the Aiper Scuba S1, the Aiper Scuba S1 Pro, and the Wybot C2 Vision. In the middle, two publish up to 150 minutes: the Wybot S2 Solar, published as a working cycle of up to 150 mins, and the Aiper Seagull Pro, published as up to 150 minutes from a 7800 mAh battery. At the entry end, the Aiper Scuba SE publishes up to 90 minutes in its spec table.

The tiers are less clean than they look once the bases are attached. Wybot quotes the C2 Vision's 180 minutes in Eco Mode, so it is that mode's number rather than the machine's. Aiper publishes the Scuba S1 Pro's 180 minutes with the mode unspecified, under its statement that figures are obtained in a controlled test environment or provided by Aiper Laboratories, and applies the same controlled-test note to the Scuba SE. Wybot states no mode basis at all for the S2 Solar's 150 minutes on the US spec table. Three of the six figures are 180 minutes on paper, and no two of them were necessarily measured the same way.

What up to actually covers

Every runtime figure in this category is an up-to number, which means it is a ceiling reached under some condition the maker chose, not a floor you can count on. The clearest illustration is the Aiper Scuba S1, where one product page carries three different durations for three different things: the spec table publishes up to 180 minutes of battery life, the WavePath 2.0 copy cites the full 150 minutes of operation, and the Enhanced Eco Mode figure is 270 minutes. Aiper also describes Eco Mode as 45-minute cycles run every 48 hours, which is a maintenance schedule rather than a session length. None of those is wrong; they answer different questions, and only the first is the battery-life spec.

The Wybot C2 Vision shows the same idea from the other direction. Its app periodic timer can split the working cycle as 1x180, 2x90, 3x60, or 4x45 minutes, which means the 180 minutes is a budget you can spend in one pass or spread across four. And the Wybot S2 Solar publishes a claim that sits outside the runtime axis entirely: Wybot markets uninterrupted continuous operation via the solar charging dock, which is a different basis than the 150-minute battery-only working cycle and should not be read as extending it.

The practical rule is to treat a published runtime as the number for one mode under one test condition. If the mode is named, plan against that mode. If it is not named, as with the Scuba S1 Pro and the S2 Solar, you are planning against an unstated condition.

Where no runtime is published

Three of the largest cordless models we publish pages for do not publish a general runtime at all, and that absence is a finding rather than a gap to fill. Beatbot publishes per-mode claims instead. For the AquaSense 2 it is up to 4 hours of continuous floor cleaning from a 10,000 mAh battery, a floor-only basis that does not cover walls and waterline. For the AquaSense 2 Pro it is up to 11 hours of continuous surface cleaning, a surface-only basis. For the AquaSense 2 Ultra it is three figures at once: up to 10 hours continuous surface cleaning, up to 5 hours floor cleaning, and up to 4.5 hours walls plus waterline cleaning.

A surface-only figure is not a general runtime, and we do not chart it as one. The Ultra makes the point plainest: on Beatbot's own numbers, the same battery yields 10 hours in one mode and 4.5 hours in another, so quoting the largest of the three as the machine's runtime would overstate its underwater endurance by more than double. The same logic makes the Pro's 11 hour figure non-comparable against the Scuba S1 Pro's 180 minutes, because the Beatbot figure describes work at the surface and the Aiper figure does not say which mode it describes.

Cycle time is unpublished across the Beatbot line too. Beatbot publishes no whole-pool cycle time for the AquaSense 2, no per-mode cycle times for the Pro, and no single whole-pool cycle time for the Ultra. What the Pro's page does publish alongside the surface claim is that six cleaning modes are selectable in the app, which is a count of options and not a duration.

Charge time, and what it costs you between sessions

Charge time gets less attention than runtime and often matters more, because it sets how soon a machine can go back in. The published figures among the models we publish pages for span 3 hours to 4.5 hours. Wybot publishes 3 hours for both the C2 Vision and the S2 Solar. Aiper publishes 3 hours for the Scuba SE, and publishes a 3 to 4 hour range for both the Scuba S1 and the Seagull Pro, of which we record the 4 hour upper bound. The Scuba S1 Pro is published at 4 hours.

Beatbot sits at the long end, which follows from the batteries: the AquaSense 2 is published at about 4 hours in its FAQ from a 10,000 mAh pack, and both the AquaSense 2 Pro and AquaSense 2 Ultra at 4.5 hours from a 13,400 mAh lithium ion pack. Read against the runtime picture, that is the reason a published charge time is worth having even when a runtime is not: it is the one endurance-adjacent figure Beatbot publishes on a common basis with everyone else.

Planning a session against published figures

Put the three numbers together in the order they constrain you. First, is there a general runtime published at all? If not, as with the three Beatbot models, you are planning against a per-mode claim and should size to the mode you will actually run, not to the headline. Second, if a runtime is published, is a mode attached? Wybot's Eco Mode note on the C2 Vision tells you the 180 minutes is a best case; the Scuba S1 Pro's unstated mode does not. Third, how long is the recharge, because a 90 minute runtime with a 3 hour charge behaves very differently across a weekend than a 180 minute runtime with a 4.5 hour charge.

If none of that appeals, the corded side removes the question.
