Multi-zone mowing: front and back yard without moving the robot
Every mower we publish a page for is recorded as supporting multiple zones, and that single flag hides most of the decision. What separates these machines is not whether the app draws a second boundary; it is what the maker documents about getting the robot from one area to the other, and what it says to do when the two areas are not physically joined. Below is each maker's own published zone and channel documentation, cited per brand, with the disagreements mapped rather than averaged. We have not hardware-tested any of these machines.

What the multi-zone flag actually covers
All eleven mowers we publish pages for carry multi-zone support in our data, which makes the field useless as a discriminator and is exactly why this guide exists. The flag records that the maker documents mowing more than one mapped area. It does not record how many areas, whether they can be scheduled separately, whether each can have its own cutting height, how the machine crosses between them, or what happens when it cannot.
Those four questions are documented very unevenly. Per-zone cutting height and per-zone schedules are published by Segway and Husqvarna in near-identical terms. Segway states that a Global Height setting applies to each zone by default and that a custom mowing height per zone overrides it, and that mowing schedules can be set per day and per zone. Husqvarna states that each work area can have individual schedules and cutting height settings and independent mowing patterns. Worx takes a different approach on the Landroid Classic line, publishing a percentage split of weekly mowing cycles across zones rather than per-zone schedules, with an example of 70 percent to Zone 1 and 30 percent to Zone 2 producing seven and three cycles out of ten.
The crossing mechanism is where the makers genuinely differ, and it is the part that decides whether a front-and-back-yard property works unattended. The next two sections lay out what each publishes.
The connector: channels, transport paths and RFID tags
Mammotion and Segway both call it a channel and both build it by driving the robot. Mammotion's support article How to Create Channel states that the channel is intended to connect various task areas or link the task area with the charging station, and that it is created by manually controlling the robot from one task area to another task area or to the charging station. Its published constraints are that the channel should be wider than 1 m (3.3 feet) and free from significant bumps. Segway's multi-zone article, dated June 11, 2026, describes moving the mower to the start of the channel and taking it to the boundary of another zone, which automatically creates the channel, and publishes one constraint: there should be no obstacles within 3.3 ft (1 meter) inside the channel.
Husqvarna's transport path is a different object with more published rules. Its EPOS work-areas article states that a transport path is required when the charging station docking point is located outside a work area, and that each work area not containing a docking point needs to be connected with a transport path. It publishes that the starting point of the transport path must be at least 1 m/3.3 feet inside the work area, that mowing is paused while the mower is following a transport path, that transport paths can be temporarily enabled or disabled in the Automower Connect app, and that a stay-out zone laid across a transport path will prevent the mower from reaching its destination. It also instructs owners to increase the path width in the app to give the mower more room, and publishes a minimum stay-out zone size of 30 x 30 cm/1 x 1 ft. That article is served from Husqvarna's UK self-service portal, so we flag its region rather than presenting it as US documentation.
Worx does not draw a path at all on the Landroid Vision WR208. Its installation wiki states that if you have separate lawns, RFID tags help the mower navigate through passages or pathways to mow each lawn area, that each Landroid Vision comes with two RFID tags with one installed in each zone, and that on its initial journey the mower follows the lawn edge and detects all installed tags to map each zone, then recognises them on subsequent scheduled runs and automatically moves to the next zone. The published conditions are specific: no obstacles or large areas of bare grass within 1.5 m of each tag with a straight lawn edge there, each zone wider than 2 m, flat ground beneath each tag, no wires or strong magnetic devices within 30 cm, the path between zones shorter than 6 m, and steps along that path lower than 3 cm. Worx adds that the mower moves in a straight line between zones, so the transition may fail if it meets boundary stones or obstacles, and that a new zone will not be mowed at all until a working schedule is set for it.

- Worx Landroid Vision: RFID tags, two supplied, one per zone, zone wider than 2 m, path between zones shorter than 6 m, steps lower than 3 cm.
- Ecovacs: pathway, generated during mapping, with support FAQs covering how many channels sit between two zones and whether paths may cross.
- Worx Landroid Classic (a different line): zones separated by a bottleneck corridor of approximately 15 cm, Zone Keeper corridor not exceeding 60 cm and at least 1 metre long.
Zone counts, and who publishes one
This is the field most buyers assume is on the spec sheet, and for the models we track it mostly is not. Sunseeker publishes the only unambiguous figure for a model on our roster: the X7 specs page lists Multi-Zones: No limit. That is a maker's claim of no published ceiling, not a tested result.
Segway publishes counts, but for other machines. Its multi-zone article lists the Terranox at up to 120 zones including non-mowing areas, the X4 at up to 120 on the same basis, the H2 at up to 30, the i2 LiDAR at 20 and the i2 AWD at 20. None of those is the Navimow i110N or the Navimow X350. The article's own framing is that all Navimow mowers handle multi-zone mowing but there is a limit to the number of zones, which means Segway is telling readers a ceiling exists for our two models and not saying what it is.
Worx publishes 2 to 4 zones for the Landroid Classic line on its installation wiki, mown in numerical order starting with Zone 1, and separately supplies two RFID tags with each Landroid Vision while noting that additional tags can be purchased, which implies a soft ceiling rather than a stated one. Husqvarna, Mammotion, Ecovacs and Dreame publish no zone count for the models we track. Dreame's A3 AWD Pro 3500 page displays a Zones label among its mode illustrations and publishes neither a count nor a channel rule.
The separated area, where the answers finally diverge
A front lawn and a back lawn joined by a grass strip is a solved problem for every maker here. A front lawn and a back lawn separated by a driveway, a fence line, or a house is not, and only two makers state plainly what happens.
Ecovacs is the most direct in the set. Its US help centre FAQ for the GOAT O1000 RTK answers whether the machine can be moved to a new lawn area and the map extended with a yes and two conditions. It recommends starting the new area by remoting the GOAT from the base station or from within the map range, so the new area relates to the original map. Then it states that if the newly added area has no path connected to the original area, the GOAT will not be able to enter the new area to work, and that the owner will need to set up a pathway or manually move the GOAT into the new area to trigger the mowing. That is a manufacturer stating, in its own support channel, that a separated lawn is a carry-the-robot situation.
Worx says the same thing about its wire-guided line and says it about the design rather than the installation. Its Landroid Classic wiki states that all zones must be connected to the charging station with the same boundary wire, that cable segments between zones should be laid side by side to form a continuous loop, and then, unusually candidly, that the multi-zone feature may not be ideal for separated zones and that manual repositioning or a second charging station in the second zone could be a solution. Mammotion approaches the same problem from the charging side rather than the mowing side: it requires a channel between task areas or between a task area and the charging station, states that without one the robot cannot automatically return for charging when the battery is low, and requires the robot to be at the station or inside the task area before mowing, moved there by hand if it is not. Husqvarna's rule is structural, that any work area without a docking point needs a transport path to reach one. Segway and Dreame publish nothing we found about a physically separated area on the models we track.
- Ecovacs: no connected path means the mower cannot enter the new area; set up a pathway or manually move the machine there.
- Worx Landroid Classic: all zones on one boundary wire loop; multi-zone may not be ideal for separated zones, with manual repositioning or a second charging station named as options.
- Mammotion: no channel to the charging station means no automatic return for charging; the robot must start at the station or inside the task area.
- Husqvarna: every work area without a docking point requires a transport path to reach one.
- Segway and Dreame: nothing published for the models we track about a physically separated area.
Husqvarna publishes two incompatible transport-path rules
This one is worth isolating, because a buyer reading Husqvarna's own documentation will get opposite instructions depending on which page they land on. The Wireless Automower FAQs page on husqvarna.com/us states that a separate transport path has to be created for each work area, and that one transport path connecting different work areas will not work.
The EPOS work-areas article on Husqvarna's UK self-service portal states the reverse as a supported option. It presents two configurations for connecting multiple work areas: one shared transport path, which it says can connect several work areas and guide the mower between them and the charging station docking point, with at least one point placed inside each work area the path enters and entry and exit points added for best results; or separate transport paths from each work area to the docking point. Earlier in the same article it states, flatly, that you only need one transport path to connect all areas.
We are not going to adjudicate that. Both are Husqvarna pages, both are current, and the likeliest explanation is a firmware or app-version difference that neither page dates. What we can say is the practical consequence: if you are planning an EPOS installation with two work areas, the shared-path configuration is documented on one Husqvarna page and explicitly ruled out on another, and Husqvarna itself notes that services and details vary by country. Building separate transport paths satisfies both documents, which is the only configuration neither page contradicts.
Where the record has gaps
The largest gap is the zone count for eight of the eleven models we publish pages for. Segway confirms a ceiling exists for the Navimow i and X3 machines without publishing it. Husqvarna, Mammotion, Ecovacs and Dreame publish nothing at all. Sunseeker's no-limit claim is the only affirmative statement in the set, and it is a marketing row rather than a tested figure.
Worx documents its Landroid Vision multi-zone rules in two places that do not quite agree on one figure. The installation wiki states that steps along the path between zones must be lower than 3 cm, while the official owner's manual on worx.com states that the height of any steps on the pathway must be less than 1.5 in, which is about 3.8 cm. The 6 m path limit matches across both, published as 6 m on the wiki and as 20 feet (6 m) in the manual. Small as it is, a step between 3 and 3.8 cm falls inside one document and outside the other.
Two absences apply to every maker here. None publishes how long a zone transition takes or how much battery it consumes, so a property split into several areas has no published cost for the travel itself, and our guide to runtime and charge time can only report the per-charge figures makers do publish. And none publishes what happens to a saved multi-zone map when the charging station or reference antenna moves, except through the winterization guidance mapped in robot mower winterization. If the connector between your areas is a genuinely narrow strip, the published width rules are collected in minimum passage width by robot mower, and the wire-free navigation systems these zone maps depend on are compared in robot mowers without a perimeter wire.

- Does the mower have to drive back to the charging station between zones?
- Husqvarna says yes and Segway says no. Husqvarna's EPOS work-areas article states that the mower returns to the charging station docking point after completing each area and before proceeding to the next one, and it states that under both of its transport-path configurations. Segway's multi-zone article states that when multiple zones are selected the mower starts mowing zones one by one and automatically navigates from one zone to another through the mapped channels, with no return-to-dock step described. Each is that maker's statement about its own hardware.
- What happens if there is no channel between the mowing area and the dock?
- Mammotion publishes the consequence directly. Its support article on setting a mowing task instructs owners to ensure a channel is created between task areas or between a task area and the charging station, and states that without it the robot will not be able to automatically return for charging when the battery is low. The same article requires the robot to be at the charging station or inside the task area before mowing, and to be moved or guided there manually if it is not. Husqvarna's equivalent rule is that a transport path is required whenever the docking point sits outside a work area.
