Robot mowers without a perimeter wire: what replaces the wire
The boundary wire is no longer the question it was: all nine active robot mowers we publish pages for are rated by their makers to run without one. The real question is what replaced it, because satellite RTK, onboard LiDAR, and camera-only navigation carry different hardware in the box and different published dependencies. We have not hardware-tested any of these machines. What follows is each maker's own published description of its navigation system, read alongside the specs that come with it.

Wire-free is the default across this set
Every one of the nine active robot mowers we publish pages for is published by its maker as requiring no perimeter wire. That includes the entry models and the flagships, so a buyer shopping in 2026 is not paying a premium to skip the wire; they are choosing which replacement system they want to install and live with. None of what follows is a judgment about how well a system works in a real yard; it is what each maker publishes about its own machine.
One model keeps both options. Husqvarna publishes the Automower 420 iQ as using EPOS satellite virtual boundaries, wire-free, with onboard radar, and states that a physical boundary wire is also supported. That is the only dual-path setup in our set, and it matters if you have a property where satellite reception is uncertain.
The systems divide into three families by what does the positioning: satellite RTK, onboard LiDAR with vision, and cameras alone. Several machines fuse more than one, so the families overlap at the edges rather than sorting cleanly.
Satellite RTK, and whether a base station comes with it
RTK uses satellite positioning corrected against a fixed reference, and the buying question is where that reference lives. Two makers put it on the network. Segway publishes the Navimow i110N as RTK GPS plus vision, its EFLS 2.0 vision-enhanced localization running on Network RTK, and states no base antenna is needed. Mammotion publishes the LUBA 3 AWD 3000 as Tri-Fusion, 360 degree LiDAR plus NetRTK GPS plus dual-camera AI vision, with NetRTK delivered through its iNavi Service and no base station or wire.
Two makers ship a physical reference station. Ecovacs publishes the GOAT O1000 RTK as LiDAR-enhanced RTK, combining RTK with a camera and 3D time-of-flight sensing, and its IPX6 rating is published as covering the mower, the charging station, and the RTK reference station, so a station is part of the installation. Husqvarna states a Husqvarna reference station is included in the box with the Automower 420 iQ, and separately notes that EPOS via Husqvarna Cloud is available in select locations, which is a coverage condition worth checking against your address before you buy.
Two more models fuse RTK with visual positioning without publishing a station requirement either way. Segway publishes the Navimow X350 as wire-free RTK plus vision, its EFLS 3.0 combining RTK, VSLAM, and VIO positioning. Sunseeker publishes the X7 as AONavi, an RTK-GNSS and VSLAM fusion with a Vision AI binocular camera. Where a maker does not state whether a station ships in the box, we do not infer one.

LiDAR and vision with no RTK at all
Two active models drop satellite positioning entirely. Mammotion publishes the YUKA mini 2 1000H as 360 degree LiDAR plus dual-camera AI vision, explicitly with no RTK station and no perimeter wire, on a published max lawn size of 0.25 acre (10,890 sq ft). Dreame publishes the A3 AWD Pro 3500 as wire free LiDAR plus vision, its OmniSense 3.0 pairing a 360 degree 3D LiDAR with binocular AI vision, and states boundary setup is done by remote control plus AI auto mapping with no boundary wire and no RTK.
The practical difference a datasheet does support is installation rather than performance: with no RTK, there is no antenna to site and no satellite coverage question, and the boundary is taught to the machine rather than surveyed. What the datasheets do not support is a claim that one approach maps or holds a line better than another. No maker in our set publishes a positioning accuracy figure we can compare across brands, so we do not rank the approaches.
Cameras alone
One model goes further and uses neither wire, satellite, nor beacons. Worx publishes the Landroid Vision WR208 as camera based AI vision navigation with no boundary wire, RTK antenna, or radio beacons, and describes its obstacle avoidance as a 140 degree wide angle HDR camera that avoids people, pets, furniture, and wildlife. Its published lawn size is 1/5 acre (8,712 sq ft), stated by Worx as a recommended lawn size and not a tested maximum.
The spec sheet has a real gap that a buyer should weigh against the simplicity. Worx does not publish battery runtime per charge for this model. It publishes a charge time of approximately 160 minutes, drawn from the owner's manual for the WR208 with the included 20V 4.0 Ah battery and 1.5 A charger, and describes it as an approximate manufacturer figure rather than a tested value. So the model that asks least of your yard at setup is also the one whose endurance cannot be compared against the mowers that publish minutes.
What wire-free navigation depends on instead
The wire was a one-time install with no running requirement. Its replacements often carry a connectivity or service dependency, and the makers publish those in the fine print rather than the headline. Mammotion publishes the LUBA 3 AWD 3000 with a built-in 4G module, 3 years of free 4G, and lifetime free iNavi NetRTK service. Dreame publishes the A3 AWD Pro 3500 with a Dreame Link module preinstalled and 3 years of Link service included, and states a separate purchase is required afterward. Mammotion sells the 4G module for the YUKA mini 2 1000H separately, published as a $129 accessory. Segway's anti-theft tracking on the Navimow i110N requires the Navimow Access+ 4G module, sold separately. Sunseeker publishes an optional 4G module for GPS anti-theft tracking on the X7.
Obstacle handling is the other thing sold alongside wire-free navigation, and it is published as counts of recognized object types rather than as a tested detection rate. Segway cites 150-plus obstacle types for the i110N through its 140 degree VisionFence camera. Ecovacs cites 200-plus types including small animals for the GOAT O1000 RTK through AIVI 3D. Mammotion cites 300-plus types for both the LUBA 3 AWD 3000 and the YUKA mini 2 1000H, Dreame 300-plus for the A3 AWD Pro, and Sunseeker over 200 including static, dynamic, and low hanging obstacles for the X7. These are maker claims about their own recognition libraries, not measurements we or anyone else verified, and the counts are not defined on a common list, so a larger number is not evidence of better avoidance.

Choosing among the wire-free approaches
For a small lot, the two lowest published list prices in our whole mower set are both wire-free: the Ecovacs GOAT O1000 RTK at $999.99, rated for up to 8,600 sq ft as a maximum coverage rating, and the Segway Navimow i110N at $1,099 with a 0.25 acre recommended mowing area. Those prices were published on each maker's US page in early July 2026 and move with sales.
